As one aspect of my recently started PhD thesis “Mapping an Empire. Territorialization, Cartography and Scientific Transfer in Tsarist Russia (1797-1919)” I research networks of European astronomers and mechanics to understand, how geodetic (which forms the mathematical foundations of geography) and astronomic methods and instruments found its way to the Russian Empire, which spaces could be mapped, and what the Russian progress could contribute to the European scientific development.
Three major questions relevant here are:
1) How the Russians obtained the knowledge
2) How they applied the knowledge they obtained
3) What could they achieve with this knowledge
Permanent transnational exchanges between a great number of experts enabled the progress and standardization of cartography as a key tool for territorialization of European and colonial space in the 19th century. In order to reconstruct how those scientific ideas and objects had migrated and developed it is necessary to analyse who (1) submitted what (2) in what quality (3) to whom (4) and also how and when this happened. Finding a suitable narrative to arrange the complex connections is a challenge. The sources allow us to reconstruct a network by means of correspondence, published reports, diaries, institutional memberships, and in some cases family connections.
But also groups in between Russia were crusial for the transfer. For example, the University of Dorpat in Livonia could be presented as central to group formation among Russian astronomers. Looking at names reveals their Baltic origin. Genealogy reflects family ambitions in sons following fathers’ professional track. Finally, sociography shows how local relationships translate into imperial professional networks.
I want to focus on the first question raised above. The key challenge seems to be determining the quality of connections between European networks of scientists. As we know this specialised knowledge in the 19th century emerged from small groups of actors. Ideally, a historian would be able to identify the hierarchies or nature of influence and the contributions between the members. I would like to reconstruct the orientation of these flows. However, it is almost impossible to find the evidence which clearly manifests these particular kinds of influence or relative contribution.
Switching to Konrad:
Martin has made clear to me that he finds a significant contradiction between what he finds as the key research question and what he is capable of accomplishing given the limitation of the sources. Indeed, this is by no means unique to Martin’s project. On the one hand, as he points out, ideally, one would be able to zoom out and consider the broader relationships between the network, identify relative influences and hierarchies, as he puts it, and establish a general evaluation of contributions as such.
Even if this were a twenty first century project with an abundance of sources, the epistimological challenges of definitively determining an ‘originary’ influence or hierarchical influences may ultimately be insurmountable. However, having discussed this with him in detail, it seems there is a more modest, perhaps smaller scale approach, that from a historical research perspective can yield valuable insights.
Given that he has relatively rich information on certain key individuals, a more micro oriented approach that considers the relationship between a few agents will offer more qualitative insight than the more ambitious goals he initially set out for himself.
Switching to Martin:
Perhaps the solution here is not necessarily a strictly microhistorical approach, but rather to, by focusing on the entirety of the realm of relations and networks of a single individual, we can grasp, at the macro level, one possible configuration of the network as a whole. This could form a template that one can test, moving in and moving out to determine the plausibility and the representativeness of this as a case.
Again, I should emphasise that this task, that is, exploring the hierarchies of influence and contributions within the network, is but one of my several questions and in reality my main task is focused on the mapmaking process itself.
All that we have discussed above is merely the first step in what is ultimately the goal: it is likely that we will initially find a rather well recognised process of difussion from West to East, while this project is hoping to evaluate the ways in which the Russians agents transform this narrative of linear difussion into one of circulation. In other words, I’m interested in the contribution of the Russian actors back on the Western scientists. They adopted and they applied, and after a certain period, they contributed, by for instance, by building one the largest observatories in Europe in 1839 well equipped with the best instruments to be found in Europe. This was the material basis for scientific progress not just for Russia but for astronomy as a science.
As a parting comment, let me note one interesting observation. Our session pointed out the seeming contradiction in interests between empires, merchants, and traders as agents, while we learned that this does not necessarily have to be the case, even in a mercantalist context. Similarly, this observation may be relevant to the case of interimperial astronomical networks. Astronomers leading the main observatories of a Europe with empires battling each other in war, maintained connections and interactions with eachother despite the conflict. For example, we find this in the case of the Crimean War of the mid-19th century. If I knew more about the quality or intimacy of these connection then I might make a contribution to understanding the impact of imperial discord on scientific development or, indeed, whether it had any at all.
