As part of “Interconnected” Roberto Sala (Basel) will be offering a workshop, provisionally entitled ‘Create your data! The value of relational databases for individual historical research’.
Embodying the core of digital humanities, databases have been at the centre of discussion on historiography in the digital era. However, most debates concern applications within broad cooperative research projects with thousand of records.

As historians seldom use databases for their own individual research, they have no skills in developing content management. This workshop aims to provide participants with the basic skills necessary for creating relational databases. We will initially focus on the elementary features of complex databases, using Filemaker Pro Advanced. We will then analyse the structure of an existing database, the League of Nations Research Engine (www.lonsea.de). Finally, we will develop the structure of a database required for a fictional research project.
