{"id":161,"date":"2015-05-01T11:27:30","date_gmt":"2015-05-01T11:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/?page_id=161"},"modified":"2023-08-29T15:13:38","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T15:13:38","slug":"exporting-map","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/tutorials\/exporting-map\/","title":{"rendered":"Exporting your Map"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em><strong>Tutorial 10<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once you have come to a stage where your map is in line with how you had imagined it, you need of course to export it so you can use it on your computer, in a website, or as part of a research publication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP 1: MAKE SURE THE MAP IS UP TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You will need to centre your map on the area you want to export. Not all the data will be exported on QGIS &#8211; only the area that is visible on your window.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure that you are using <a href=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/tutorials\/projections\/\">the right CRS<\/a> and that your map.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-what-we-see1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-232 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-what-we-see1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"552\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-what-we-see1.jpg 552w, https:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-what-we-see1-300x285.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 552px) 100vw, 552px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>All I can see on QGIS is\u00a0the British Isles. It is too zoomed in to see the rest of the world.<br \/>\nI can also get rid of other parts of the globe by <a href=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/tutorials\/performing-queries\/\">performing queries<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP 2: OPEN THE PRINT COMPOSER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-new-print-composer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-193\" src=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-new-print-composer.jpg\" alt=\"9 new print composer\" width=\"228\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You then need to click on\u00a0<strong>Project<\/strong> then on <b>New Print Composer<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>At that point you need to create a title for this map. I choose\u00a0<strong>Universities in the British Isles before the Enlightenment.<\/strong> Immediately after clicking on\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong>, the print composer opens. Go to\u00a0<strong>Layout<\/strong> and click on\u00a0<strong>Add map\u00a0<\/strong>then drag a rectangle on your print composer, this is where your map will be inserted as soon as you cease to drag the rectangle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-drag-rectangle1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-234 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-drag-rectangle1-1024x366.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-drag-rectangle1-1024x366.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-drag-rectangle1-300x107.jpg 300w, https:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-drag-rectangle1.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-move-item-content.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-233\" src=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-move-item-content.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"121\" height=\"43\" \/><\/a>If the map is not quite centred on the content you wish to display, you can always click on\u00a0<strong>Layout<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Move content<\/strong> in order to focus on your desired area. If you wish to zoom your content in or out, you can set the scale in the <strong>Item Properties<\/strong> tab on the right. The bigger the number, the more global the scale. Under\u00a0<strong>Layout<\/strong>, click on\u00a0<strong>Add Label<\/strong> and drag a rectangle where you want your title to appear. The Label window will appear on the right, where you will be able to type your title again and edit its appearance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-label-font.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-196\" src=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-label-font.jpg\" alt=\"9 label font\" width=\"384\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-label-font.jpg 384w, https:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-label-font-300x277.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our map is now ready to be exported. It is a very simple map and there are additional features you may want to use &#8211; please check our additional resources if you wish to.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/final-map1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-238 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/final-map1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/final-map1.jpg 701w, https:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/final-map1-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, when ready to export, click on\u00a0<strong>Composer<\/strong>. You then have three options.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-export-as.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-198\" src=\"http:\/\/transnationalhistory.net\/mapping\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-export-as.jpg\" alt=\"9 export as\" width=\"247\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Export as Image<\/strong>: you can turn the map into a .png, .jpg, .tif or any other image file type. This will be a good option if you\u00a0don&#8217;t want to edit the map in the future and if you want to insert it straight into your work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Export as PDF<\/strong>: this alternative is similar to the previous one, except that your map will be a PDF file.
